Ngamba Island Chimpanzee Sanctuary

Ngamba Island is situated at Lake Victoria and is definitely one of the most gifted and beautiful Islands in Uganda famous known for inhabiting Chimpanzees.

The Island is situated few kilometers away from Entebbe where you will get a speed boat, ship or ferry and sail on Lake Victoria but as you sail on the lake, you will also enjoy the cool breeze and the amazing scenery displayed by a variety of islands at the lake as well as viewing different water bird species which will really give you great accompaniment.

The sanctuary was basically put in place (1998) in order to offer shelter to the orphaned and homeless chimpanzees in Uganda and currently the sanctuary resides approximately 42 chimps. While sailing heading to the Island, your tour guide will be narrating to you interesting stories about the Island including some history of the place.

The guide will also tell you various behaviors of the chimpanzees in the sanctuary such that when you arrive there, you will have a glance about them and also be aware of the stubborn ones which at times tend to throw stones at people but all this is out of excitement and fun.

Chimpanzees at the sanctuary feed on various fruits such as Avocados, Carrots, passion fruits, Water Melons, tomatoes, water melons and ripe bananas.

The primates feed four times in a single day but Eggs and porridge are also liked by the primates and whenever they fall sick, there is a sanctuary clinic at the Island where they are treated from.

Other residents there include monkeys, various bird species and some reptile species. There are good accommodations at Ngamba Island chimpanzee sanctuary to offer shelter to its visitors.

Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary

It is situated about 180 kilometers away in the north of Uganda’s capital city (Kampala) near Nakitoma Village found in Nakasongola District in the Kafu River Basin. Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary is a collaborative effort between the Uganda Wildlife Authority, the Rhino Fund Uganda, a Ugandan NGO committed to the restoration of Uganda’s rhinoceros population and Ziwa Ranchers Limited which is a private land management company.

The sanctuary is a secure place for rhinos since it is protected from human and non-human predators and gradually re-introduced into Uganda’s national parks while at the same time allowing the public to enjoy these majestic animals as the project moves forward.

The sanctuary is tightly protected by many park rangers and security guards who keep a 24-hour watch on the rhinos to ensure that they don’t get any harm from humans and other predators that may want to harm them.

Apart from rhinos, the sanctuary also resides monkeys, antelopes, hippopotamuses, crocodiles and numerous bird species and interesting activities in the sanctuary include; canoe riding, nature walks and bird watching.

The sanctuary is the only place in Uganda for viewing the Rhinos and currently it boosts over 22 Rhinos which is a great increase to the only six which the sanctuary begun with.
